How Much D#@% Oil does a 1550 Rearend Hold?

I always manage to do something stupid once a day (sometimes more). I drained the gear oil out of the 1550 yesterday. Put a 5 gallon bucket under it and forgot about it. Looked a few minutes later. The bucket was full and 90W was all over the gravel drive right where I have to work (Changing wheels, axle seals, and brake seals). What a mess. Let it soak overnight. Fortunately I have a little stone pile so I spread some over the area. Should be O.K. If it hadn't been for taking off the wheels it would have been in my barn on the cement. Wouldn't that have been nice.

Obviously the 4 1/2 gallons of gear oil I have isn't enough to refill it.

The other thing to be careful of is, many "5 gallon" buckets- aren't. The white buckets that you get with laundry detergent from the farm store, etc., are more likely to be 4 gallons or so. Been there, done that, too. If you're draining 10 gallons, have 3 buckets, just in case.

I just did the rear end lube in our 1855, it was about 11 gallons. When I did the 1600 a few years back, I don't think it was quite 10 gallons.

What was the reason for changing the oil in the 1550 and 1600.just curious? They are filtered and don't generate any heat. Not being a smart alec, just wondered.

I changed the oil in the tractors because we have no idea when they were changed last. It's the same principal as changing your engine oil. yes it's filtered, but it still gets full of contaminants.

When I did the oil on the 1600 and 1855, they were both full of a very dark/almost black oil, as compared to the light golden yellow of new oil. Plus the 1600 had some water in there from sitting for so long. No water came out of the 1855, but it was still nasty.

If I ever get our 1755 running again, that one will definately need the same treatment after sitting for so long.

The short version of the story is that I am putting different rear wheels on. While they are off I am replacing rear axle seals and brake shaft seals. Who knows how old this oil is so I am replacing it also.

According to my I&T a 1550 holds 40 quarts in the rear end. Hope this helps, Stu.
