Any suggestions for getting the u-bolts loose on a rear axle hub? Working on a 1550 row crop. I have ruined one and just got started. I screwed the nuts on and beat on them. The nuts and bolts are too soft. The nuts just flatten out and mash into the threads of the bolt. And it has barely moved at that. AGCO wants $39.00 (yes that's thirty-nine) each for the u-bolts. Anybody know of another u-bolt that will work? Looks like this is a 2 5/8" axle. I have worked on these before and never had one stuck this bad.

HELP!!!!

I use a brass hammer, place the brass hammer on the head of the bolt after you remove the nut and then with a large steel hammer you hit the brass hammer. This will prevent you from destroying the bolts because the brass is softer and won"t damage anything. This always works but you have to hit them very hard, may need someone to hold the brass hammer. You can get those brass hammer a most any hardware store, buy a large cheap one cause this will probably damage the hammer some. Chris

Thanks for your advice. As much damage as I have done to the steel bolt and nut it looks like I would destroy a brass hammer. I have never used one so I don't know for sure. I called the guy in Freeport. He is sending me a new set.

I am going to try to beat them out as far as they will go with the nuts on them. Then cut the nuts off and try to drive them out with a hammer and punch.

What I have done before is this. Loosen them all up just a little bit. Then pour tranny fluid PB balster etc. all over them. Then take it for a short drive be sure to turn both lft and right a lot. Just be careful not to drive it to long since you could cause other problems like the bolts braking or the wheel to fall off. You want to do it just enough for them to start to work them selfs loose

And after you get them off you might find they are rusted enough they are no longer safe to use. Call Paul's spring and Fender, Freeport Illinois 815-233-5470. You need the bolt diameter, axle diameter and length. $8 to $10 should get you a new bolt. Might as well order a set.

I talked to Paul today. He is going to fix me up with 6 bolts and 12 nuts for a little less than the cost of 2 from Agco. That includes shipping. Thanks for the info.

I told him he could probably have a nice little deal making these up if he could get the info on all the different sizes on these Oliver tractors. Advertise on the internet and probably sell some. Wouldn't get rich but would have some business.

I just went thru this with my S77. I used an air chisel with a tip that had about a 1-1/4" diameter (enough to fit over a nut) by 3/8" deep recess on it. took the lockwashers off and then put the nuts back on threaded flush with the end of the bolt. Had to push them up and then hammer back down a few times to loosen them up enough. Another thing that works fairly well is using a piece of square stock and pounding on the nut. It migh be better to pull the wheel of for better access.
I bought 3 new U bolts from Agco for $30+, then heard about a local spring shop that makes them. They made up the other 3 for $8.00 a piece and I was out of there in 10 minutes! Wish I had known before I bought the agco bolts!

Try the two important P's; s high quality penetrating oil and patience. If you want to add a little extra try a small (and I mean a small) amount of heat and a little (and I mean little) gentle persuasion with a hammer applied to a sacrifcial piece of brass or aluminum and not directly to the nut/u-bolt.
