Going to look at a 1550 with a gas engine. One owner, 14.9x38 tires, short wheelbase clock works and says 5900 hours. Has Hydra power. My experience is red. This looks like a Farmall 656. What are some things to look for, and where would you place the dollars for it? Tractor is supposed to be clean with no dents, all tin, and the motor is original. Thanks in advance, guys.

My father in law has one with 15,000 hrs and no rebuilds (gas). It has always been a great tractor and very reliable. Years ago as a teenager working on the farm he told me that Oliver was one of the best tractors ever built. He really help shape my opinion of Oliver tractors. I'd think that if the hours are correct then it'd be a good buy at <$7000. Chris

Guess my thumb is a little shorter than rrlund's. Gas is a fairly major drawback these days, unless you're using it for snow work in winter. I'd say $3,000 to $3,500.

Saw one on an auction a year ago spring,no better than mine,brought $5700 and didn't take long to get there either. For a gasser,they really aren't that bad on consumption,not like the 1750-1800-1850. Not much worse than the 77.

Rule of thumb has always pretty much been $4500,plus or minus depending on condition. Nothing really to look for that you wouldn't on any other tractor. It's probably going to have Hydra Power drive. That's like the IH torque amp,only 100% more reliable. It'll free wheel in low like the torque. Just make sure it works OK. Parts are still available and fairly inexpensive,so don't let it scare you off. As for the tractor itself,I have one just like it with 9200 hours,still as dependable and solid as it ever was. Let me just say,you wouldn't get mine for $6500. Just one of those dependable tractors that's a classic.
