In the late 60's I worked on a farm in northern Va and used a super 77 rowcrop. We had installed a 8 volt battery to help start tractor. 8 volt would give it a good spin. Do they still make 8 volt batteries? Also what should be the the voltage output of 77 rowcrop generator?

I will confirm the other comments on the battery cables. I used to sell parts. We made battery cables out of 1/0 (I think) welding cable. I replaced some of mine and it made a big difference. Not always the cure but would sure be a good place to start.

A few years ago I bought a 8 volt for my "70". Problem seems to be that nobody makes an 8 volt charger, so if your tractor won't run, the battery can't be properly charged. I wasted my money and will now upgrade battery cables as the other posters suggest.

Like old and RAB said, you have more wrong. To answer one question, like they said,it's been discussed before, some say a generator shop can turn up the voltage regulator to 8 volts. What the real problem is though on a 77 is 2 fold. Number 1,the ground system on those gave out when they were about two years old. They grounded under the dash and rust would build up between there and the frame. You need a longer cable to ground to the bell housing right at the starter. Second and more important,I'm guessing the cables have been replaced. If you have the small 12 volt cables, you are loosing 2/3s of your amperage from the 6 voly battery. You have 6 volts, just not enough amps. You need 2.0 guage cables with a 6 volt. I didn't believe it myself when the former Oliver dealer I deal with told me what was wrong.I let him go ahead and make a new set of cables, not expecting much. I couldn't believe it! I went right back and had him make another set for my 70 and changed it BACK to 6 volt.

Yes they still make 8 volt batterys but using one at best is a bandide fix for needing a simple tune up or a wore out engine. If it where me I would fix what is wrong or swithc to a 12 volt system because the genny will never keep an 8 volt battery charged up as it should be unless you have some work done to the genny

Hi, it's been discussed soooo many times before. Search the archives for the information and then make up your own mind. Me? I wouldn't bother. fix it properly or change to 12 as another alternative.
Regards, RAB

Not exactly sure of the voltage output but it should be enough to charge an 8 volt battery. They do still make them, in fact I just picked one up for our 88, and that's what we've always ran in that tractor. It'll spin it over real nice, even in the winter time. It's an Interstate and their part number is 1-8V-VHD. Gary
