Are there any problems using a combination trans/hydraulic oil in the transmission of my 550?

Those usually don't have a high enough viscosity. Better to use gear oil. Some say the higher the better, but I use 80w-90 with no problems. I would hate to starve a component and need to tear it down just for too thin a lube.

Mongo, Thanks for the response. The owner's manual I have says to use 10W-30 motor oil with a 102 082A additive. The additive is an EP additive only , but is no longer available. I have 80W-90 in the gear box now, but on cold winter mornings engaging the clutch after starting the engine and the tranny in neutral will kill the engine. What concerns me is lack of lubrication during the winter. I farm with mostly Case-IH equipment from Model 7240 downward in size. Everything uses Hy-tran. Now if Hy-tran is used in a 200 hp tranny with excellent results, why not a 40 hp tranny? Gear metallurgy has changed very little in 40 years so why not use the superior lubricating oil? This winter operation is a big concern of mine since I use the 550 on a daily basis.

Andy, are you sure your talking about oil for the trans and not the hydraulics. My 55 manual says 140 wt for the trans over 32 degrees, 90 wt below 32 degrees. It says use 10-30wt motor oil for the hydraulics, which takes about 5-6 quarts.
