I am working on a 1961 770 w/narrow front end. I took it down the road and the frtont end shimmys and wobbles very violently from side to side. This tractor has a power steering unit mouted to the back of he generator, is this the factory one or not? I have jacked the front end up and the play appears to mostly be in the steering box under the radiator. It shakes hard enough that it will pull the steering wheel out of your hands. Is there any adjustment in the steering box?

Hold on there fellers. With power steering I don't think the pictures below apply. According to the shop manual they will shimmy if there is air in the system. It says to fill the reservior, then with the engine running, turn the steering wheel to the right as far as it will go. Loosten the bleed screw on the end of the cylinder housing. When the oil is free of air and bubbles, tighten the screw and refill the reservoir. It says you can get to the screw from behind without removing the radiator, just be careful of the pully and fan belt.

Thanks for the help guys! I have jacked the tractor up and the rim and tires appear to be ok. I will pull the radiator off and take a peek in the steering box and check out the adjustment. I had a old Farmall M once that shook like this, it needed bearings in the vertical shaft. I'll look into it farther tommorrow. The steering box will need to come out to fix all the oil leaks it has. Thanks again.

There are some shims in there you can take out or add to. Make sure your wheels bearings are good before you tear into this steering box.

Most of our fleetline, and 880's have the play in the steering box as you describe, but none shakes or shimmies like yours.Only makes for a little more play in the steering wheel.

I'd say you more than likely have a bent rim or a tire ply separation issue.Yes, the p.steering pump at rear of generator is factory. ~brad
