I just purchased this 77 from a VA college. Maint person siad it had been in garage for the 17 years he had been there. Once a year it was used in Parade and started to move around the garage. THE OIL PRESSURE WILL NOT REGISTER. I have installed a new one and it reads 10# on a 80# gauge. Engine has no noise. Is this an acceptable oil pressure?
Thanks , VA gasman

I thought you were asking earlier about wanting like original style gauges. They have a needle that shows low and work range and vary with engine rpm"s. That 80# gauge is way too high. Correct pressure is 14-18 psi at high idle according to IT manual.

I"d pull the oil pressure line off and blow it out and clean it out real good. Probably lots of gunk in there. Inspect oil relief valve spring also, should test at 2 1/4 to 2 3/4 lbs. at a height of 1 1/16 inches. This spring was updated on later models as part # 1K303 According to IT manual.

Don't know if 10psi is good or not but I do know the reason the factory gauges didn't have numbers is that these old engines didn't use a real high pressure type oil system. Also what weight oil are you useing that can make a difference in what pressure you get. In one of my 77s if I used a muti weight oil I have real low pressure but it runs good and has for 10 plus years so I use a 30W or 40W oil in. It could also have clogged up oil lines and you might take the line loose from the gauge and spin the engine over with out turning it on and see if you do get a real good flow of oil. Yes the engine should turn over with the starter button with the switch turned off
