We just obtained a Cockshutt 50 a few weeks back. When we got it the motor wouldn't turn. Took off the flywheel cover and a quick little pry with broke it loose. Thought we were on our way to getting it started! Now it will only make about a 3/4 turn and stops dead? Got any ideas?

Yesterday we got a little farther with it. Took the engine out. The valves look good. Removed the starter. Monday we'll start taking it apart. Whatever it is hitting is rock solid. I'll let you know Monday what we find....

Can you turn engine over completely by using a crank handle or even a small bar in clutch housing. if you can do this whole way through several times with no apparent restance.... then I would look at started drive and also ring gear. if starter drive comes out and hangs up it will do this. If its ok then when motor is turned fast enough or actually starts the drive is throwed back out. if it sticks it will continue to run after motor starts or if real bad will actually stick motor befor it can start. just my 2 cent but I have had it happen a time or two. good luck Irv

Mouse nest in the cylinder? Maybe take the spark plugs out and see if there is something stopping the piston from coming up.

Might want to check the valves, could be a valve stuck in the open position and one of the pistons hitting it or as the previous post says, something more serious. Take the valve cover off and you should be able to see if any valves are sticking down.
