ive recently got a 550 deisel to use with a finish mower. am not real familiar with the tractor. with the pto engaged, sometimes it will disengage on its own when i push in the clutch to shift from forward or reverse. the pto never slips when under load. also the bolt that holds the pto output shaft keeps breaking and letting the shaft come out. is there a cure or do they just act this way. thanks in advance.

The book usally said 14 inches from the back of the PTO shaft to the center of the hitch hole. You may need to move the hitch out.

Problem on the disengagement is somebody did not grease the unit. Also this problem is on the clutch petal pivot. Check it first. If that bolt is breaking you again have a lubrication problem with the PTO shaft on the mower. That PTO has to slide very freely to compensate for changes in length. Start there. More questions.J

greased the fittings i found around the clutch and pivot pins. will have to use it a while to see how that works. as far as the pto bolt breaking, no luck there yet. dad broke three this afternoon with a small tedder. the shaft in the tedder slides ok. the bolts are 5/16 and are not a tight fit. would a grade 8 bolt work better? i tried to drill out to a 3/8 but had no drill bit that would cut the shaft. would a larger diameter bolt cause a problem further in the tractor? if not, ill get a machine shop to enlarge the hole.

In 16 years working for a dealer I never saw one that broke. How much shorter can your shaft move when it is hooked up? How freely does your shaft slide? End thrust is what is breaking that bolt.
