I picked up an Oliver 402 planter this last week. The question will be like a needle in a haystack but it never hurts to ask. I am looking for sweetcorn plates for this planter. It is a 1958 model. It has large round corn plates in it now. I will be getting a manual for it this summer but does someone have a manual that would tell me the # of plate I am looking for? I am also needing the drive chain that goes from the main sprocket to the front shaft that turns all the planter boxes. Any info about this planter or knowledge is most welcome. I plan to post some pictures next spring of this planting behind the 59 770 which should make for a nostalgic picture. Many thanks in advance.

Leroy is correct on the fertilizer shear pins!. I think that chain is just plain steel chain!. My employer sold a fair number of those planters as well as the little newer 452 models. I sent you an e-mail on a possiable source for plates. I will be home by Friday night in case you replied.

Been over 30 year ago I got rid of mine and at that time plates were NOT avaible in any size and the few that I had with the planter the numbers did not corespond with any numbers the seed dealers listed on the seed bags, at that time they would try to match seed to the plated for us by opening a bag and pulling out a few kernals. And DO NOT put fertilizer in the boxes before you go to the field, even if it is only 200 feet, you will shear the pins that drive the fertilizer wheel in the bottom of each hopper and that is no fun digging out that fertilizer after you have planted some without fertilizer thinking it was putting down the fertilizer. And the correct tire size for that planter is a 6:40 X 15". And that 770 should pull it in high gear as they do not take much power, Pulled mine with a 2N Ford. And for those that do not know what the planter is it is a 4 row wide only clutch lift pull type tractor planter. Since I got rid of mine have never seen anouther one. More just a good Oliver collector item than good for use now. Was a good planter when new. Just when Oliver still existed there was no dealer support for their planters. Think it would be worse now.

Thanks for the info. This planter is a pretty late model 402. It has white wheels and hydraulic lift. This one never came with fertilizer boxes which is a good thing anyway. The seed hoppers are in darn good shape. One has a dent in it but should be easy to straighten. You're right about not seeing many of these around. I've seen literature and other items pertaining to the 452 but nothing on the 402. I've got all the pulleys loosened up in the back for the trip markers. The telescoping handle that you turn either way is kind of neat. The bushings actually in those pulleys came right out which is amazing. The planter will be having new rubber on it by next spring via Good Year cross treads that are fairly correct for the make. If anyone knows of some cheaper brands that offer a cross tread traction implement tire I would like to know since the ones I put on my rake were pricey but look nice. I've really got to go to Charles City to the museum to get a manual yet this summer so I can see if I'm missing anything. Also, the paint scheme looks fairly simple but I am wondering if 402 was displayed anywhere on the frame and if Oliver was displayed anywhere else but the seed boxes.

I can't remember the colors but I don't think the wheels were white. Mine was a clutch lift. The manual I had went with the planter but the seed plate numbers in the manual none of them matched up with any of the plates or with any of the seed company plate recommend numbers. Can't remember if any identification on the planter except the metal tag.
