Oliver 880 Gears Grind

I have an Oliver 880, 6 cylinder diesel, with 6 speed trans, no Power-Booster, no Reverse-O-Torc Drive. When I am in neutral with the clutch disengaged, the output shaft continues to turn, not as fast as engine speed, but enough that when shifting into a gear, the transmission grinds, then will go into gear. If I do not reduce the engine speed to idle, the gears grind a lot.

Am I looking at a clutch overhaul soon, or is there a fix for this situation that is short of removing the clutch? I speculate that the pilot bushing is grabbing the output shaft and not wanting to turn loose of it, am I close?

Thanks for any suggestions.

Sounds like a clutch problem to me, do you have any free travel on the pedal ? is it all gone ? if it is as simple as a clutch throw out bearing I say fix it before you trash a hard to find and repair tranny

Well, I have plenty of free play. I had over 1 inch so I adjusted it up to 3/4 inch in hopes that the clutch was not fully disengaging. That did not solve the problem. Not to say that it isn't the clutch though.

Do you by chance have the wrong oil in the tranny or hyd fluid leaking into the tranny which will thin the oil out. I know on my S88 before I fixed a seal in the hyds I had the same problem because of thin oil so the gears would keep spinning for a very long time

Well, that is a good suggestion except I can stop the rotation of the output shaft by hand with little effort. Then when I release it the shaft starts to slowly rotate again and increased to match the engine rpm. Seems like the rotation of the flywheel is causing the pressure plate go into a slow rotation and slowly pick up speed to match the rpm's of the engine.

In very low idle, I can shift into gear with only a slight clunk, but if I am up a single notch on the throttle position, then I grind noticablly. The clutch is disengaging fully because I can stop the rotation of the output shaft with little effort.

Hummmmm ...
