A couple lady friends (mother and daughter) have decided to sell their tractor and I'm trying to help them out. They say it ain't dependable enough any more. Starts hard. Runs hot. Maybe a problem with the xmission (grinding). They tell me this is a '57 Cockshutt 540. Much as I might like to have it, I'm going to pass it up. But I would like to be able to let them know a $$ range of what it might be worth. TIA.

Hi Les,

It is a 1958 COCKSHUTT 540.

The ailments listed: hard starting (6 Volt), over heating, trans. grinding are not serious or life threatening.

I have many of the parts that you wll need after you purchase it.

I know those ailments aren't life threatening but I'm still not interested in the tractor unless I am the recipient of an unexpected windfall in the near future.

I live in New Hampshire. The tractor is located in Concord. What model of Oliver is comparable to the 540? I have a 550 Oliver (which I am also looking to sell) and this tractor is not really all that similar, or doesn't seem to me to be.

There is no corresponding Oliver- The Cockshutt 20, 30, 35, 40, & 50 (Produced from late '40's until 1957) and the 540, 550, 560, 570 and some others (1958 to 1962) were built by the Cochshutt company, not Oliver, and none of them were badged as Olivers. The confusion comes in because Oliver also built a 550 (completely different than the Cockshutt-built 550), but then after Cockshutt stopped producing its own tractors in 1962, White (who had purchased Oliver, Cockshutt and Minneapolis Moline) began badging some of its models, including the 550, as Cockshutts. So you have "genuine" Cockshutt 550's, and "Oliver-Cockshutt" 550's. I hope I haven't succeeded in getting you hopelessly confused.

hey there, what you have is a Cockshutt model 540 tractor. It can;t be a 57 because these tractors weren;t produced till 1958 if memory serves. I think that 1957 was the last year for the round nose or pre-cursor's to this range. Where abouts are you located, I bought one of these last summer for $1500 up here in Ontario Canada. Mind you it had bad engine seals and the PTO needed work but ya let me know how it works out for ya

From the pictures I would guess any where from around $700-1500. But if I could see it in person and could do my normal checks it might be lower or higher.
