I'm looking for my first hobby farm tractor. I've kinda fallen for the 550. I see some with loaders. Are they easy to take off or best to leave in place. I will be using for food plot work, little mowing. Bucket sure seems nice to have? Thoughts and concerns appreciated.

Where and what year is your 550? Gas or Diesel?

The 550 I have has a loader that is easy enough to remove - 12 bolts.
They are kinda hard to steer without power-steering, but I manage by slowing down to a crawl before steering hard!!
They say that they might be too much weight on the front with a loader, but mine seems OK after years of this abuse.
I have recently purchased rear wheel weights to lessen rear wheel slip, for example, on gravel - mostly again when turning.
I don't know how anyone manages without a loader of some kind. Lifting heavy stuff, pushing, dragging with downward pressure, as well as shovelling sand, snow, dirt and sh*t!
BUT...beware, a trip loader is a pain in the...

Hey Chris, where did you find those weights? Are they Oliver or after market? I am still waiting to see some on the west coast for a super 55

I got the wheel weights from Kent in Texas. He is always breaking 55s and 550s - and shipping to you would be a lot less than to me in NY! Beware though, study the parts book really well as there are many wheel weight options and they seem to differ by year too!
Kent Gordon kgteinc2atearthlink.net
Oliver wheel weights often turn up on eBay too...and whatever you think of eBay, you cannot really go wrong with wheel weights, as long as they are the right ones for your tractor.

PS. First time I tried this post I coiuld not get Kent's email to appear, so replace the a-t with the @ and you will get it.

Join my campaign for a standard in posting email addresses without fear of spammers picking them up (or being filtered by the site). jimjones at msn dot com. Its intuitive, and you don't have to tell recipient to drop the xyx, or change the at to @, etc. (In the process of posting this, I discovered that using three x's in a row (as opposed to xyx above) will cause your whole posting to be refused).

just removing the bucket helps, but generally removing the loader arms is not too difficult if it is organised properly. A loader can be a very useful implement, although a 3 point box can be close, depending on situation.
