I have a cockshutt tractor (model 30) that I am putting back to 6 volt positive ground. What side of the ammetre do I run the live wire to? The charge side or the discharge side?
thanks.

Thanks Bob. I will hook it up on saturday and see what I've got. I am a greenhorn to say the least at this sort of thing , so I really appreciate all the help.

Thanks guys. I am still a little confused as to which side I run the live wire to. This old guage is rusted on the back and I can't see any markings. Only thing I know is which side is either charge or discharge.

The reason I explained it to you the way I did is that I'm NOT sure if there's an absolute answer, as it's POSSIBLE the internal construction MAY be different from one ammeter to another, making the connections to the posts opposite between different ammeters. Connect it up as I told you, with the "hot" lead from the battery (comes from the starter switch or solenoid) ALONE on one post, and ALL loads and the "charge" lead to the other post.

If it then reads "backwards", swap the leads.

The battery connects to one side, and the ALL other leads, charging and load, go to the other side. If the meter reads backwards, swap the leads between the posts.

It doesn't matter what ground you are using. The ammeter is in series, with the live wire into the ammeter on the live side - in your case the negative.
