My friend has a Oliver 1655 which will run strong for about 2 hours and then will quit running. We believe it is starving for gas. He recently rebuilt the tractor, including the carb and a new float. Any suggestions?

I worked on mine for two years. Finally added a Mallory distributor and and electronic igition and it solved the problem. Not cheap but it has never ran better. Maibach tractor has sold a lot of these to cure distributor problems.

Hi Our 1655 did just exactly that. If you plowed with it in about the time you said it would act up. Clear gas line and new coil will help, but check to make sure the vacuum advance and mechanical advance are working, we ran across a problem there. The suggestion of removing the front radiator screen sounds like a good idea, I nver tried that. But the best cure of all is to trade it for a diesel. Jeff

A couple of thoughts: Is the gas cap venting? A couple of hours of run time could use enough fuel to create a vacuum in the tank.

Also, our 1650G would vapor-lock on a hot day if you were pushing it hard. Removing the trash screen from in front of the radiator cured the problem. The only downside is that we have to blow the rad out a little more often.

You could have a piece of dirt floating around in the tank that eventually works its way into the sediment bowl. The only way to correct this is to drain the tank and remove the whole sediment bowl assembly from the tank and clean it thoroughly.

Another possibility could be a weak coil. Sometimes they will work good until the tractor gets really hot and then cut out. They are probably some other possibilities that don't come to mind right now. Good luck!

Thank you for your suggestions. The gas tank has been relined and an in-line filter has been put in down from the sediment bowl. Also, the coil is brand new.

Unless it has a fuel pump on it most in-line filter will casue more trouble then they are worth. I would pull it off and see if the problem goes away. I've gotten more cases of beer by doing just that and throwing away in-line filters.
