550 3 pt cycling

When we put a load on the 3 pt, and position it about halfway down or so, the arms just cycle up and down like crazy. About 1 cycle per second, and 2" or so it seems. Doesn"t happen as much near the top of the stroke. (Tried to use a NH 450 sickle mower on it, when I lowered it down to cut the cycling about shook me out of the seat.)

So, to get this fixed and to do some engine stuff, I bought the manual from the museum and have the cylinder and valve on the bench. It says to put 4 tons of force on it with a press and watch for where oil seeps out. Trouble is I don"t have a press, much less one with a pressure gauge. Any ideas how to bench test this another way?

Did I jump in to fast? Is there something else I should have checked before performing open heart surgery? (Although what fun would owner this thing be if I didn"t get to wrench on it?)

Also, since I have the 3 pt and tranny opened up, is there anything else I should look at while I"m there? Tranny gears look good, very minor wear on the teeth.

I believe I have found the problem. The cylinder has some gouges about halfway in, which correlates to the arms working okay at the top, but going crazy partway down. Gouges are deep enough I could see oil shooting past. The piston looks good, I took the check ball out and there was some gunky stuff in there, so I cleaned that. Waiting for pictures of a used one.

IF WHAT YOU SAY IS ACCURATE, YOU MAY BE ABLE TO TAKE THE CYL. TO A LOCAL AUTO MACHINE SHOP AND SEE IF IT CAN BE HONED ANOUGH TO TAKE OUT THE SCORING ON THE WALLS THEN POLLISH THE CYLINDER, AND RESEAL, SEE WHAT HAPPENS FROM THERE, AT THIS POINT NIT MAY BE CHEAPER THAN TRYING TO FIND A USED CYL WITH POSSIBLY THE SAME PROBLEMS. MINE DID THOS YEARS AGO AND I USED A DEGLAZING STONE (OIL SOAKED) OF COARSE, AND CROSS HATCHED THE BORE LIKE AN ENGINE CYL, BORE. THEN I ADJUSTED THE FLOATING LINKAGE WHILE IT WAS APART, IT WORKS GREAT,

I have leakage at the spool valve on my super 55. J says its easy to get a false reading for the spool valve has to be just right in the bore. I knew mine was leaking because of the wear on the spool valve itself. Im pretty sure its just easier to replace the whole internal control valve assemblt if the spool is leaking. There are also other possibilities, if you have the external hydraulics hookup then make sure everthing in there is clean. Also check the internal control relief valve. Do you get any air in the system? I will end up replacing the internal control valve assembly and put a good used pump in mine to fix the system. One good thing about the hydraulics is they are pretty simple to repair. I have considered rebuilding my pump, but i"m not sure if everything else can be surface ground a couple thousandths and put in a cartridge kit. If there is a way to repair the internal spool valve I would like to know. I wasn"t sure if special seals could be put in one to stop the leakage. I know a normal o-ring wouldn"t work.

Has anybody really fixed this problem on a 550. I think they all cycle.
Lot's of old posts on this problem. I took the hydraulic system apart on mine and noticed that the lift cylinder did not have the leather washer installed with the o-ring on the lift piston. I figured that was the problem and installed the leather washer with a new o-ring and put back together. I gave up after this didn't fix it. Awful lot of Super 55 and 550 owners with this problem.
All kidding aside HOW do you put the 4 tons of pressure on it? It might be worth it to take to a machine shop and have it done. My I&T manual says leakage is usually at cylinder, spool valve or at ball check valve.
HOW WOULD YOU REPAIR LEAKAGE AT SPOOL VALVE?
