Hey
When I bought this tractor it was already converted over to 12 volt. There were ballast resistors both in series to the coil and the original lights. I'm wondering if I change to 12 volt bulbs and put on a 12 volt coil would I be able to get rid of these confound resistors but at the same time still keep the original contents of the distributor or would i have to change the condensor and points and the likes. I'm looking for the most cost efective route here. Thanks to all in advance for your input

You can get a 12 volt coil from Napa with the built-in resistor. The part number is 1C14SB and the cost is around $40.00. Hal
PS: Their ballast resistor number is ECH1CR13 if you decide to stay with the ballast resistor.

The coil makes no difference. The ballast resistor is there to limit the running current in the coil. A 12 volt coil would probably have one built into it. A bypass circuit to the coil, from the starter circuit, would improve starting spark energy. Bob is correct in that the distributor is still as original, 6 or 12 volt. It is just those lights which are 1) wasting power (half is being dissipated in the resistors) and 2) 12 volt lighting is much brighter than the 6 volt systems they replaced. You could run two lights in series (both go out if one fails), find bulbs which will fit the existing lights or change the lights if the bulbs are not available at a reasonable cost (ongoing, remember).

With a TRUE 12-Volt coil and 12-Volt lights, NO resistors will be needed.

The breaker points and condensor don't give a gnat's BUTT if the system is 6-Volt or 12-Volt.
