I'm restoring a 1960 770 with factory Oliver power steering. It is functional and seems to work ok but it leaks somewhere at the unit and runs down the pedestal and gets fluid on the tire too. Agco has pretty much no parts availabe. I do have a shop manual - are these tough to replace the seals in? Does anybody or an shops repair these and what does that cost? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Ollie77,
Its been a while since I worked on one. Im assuming yours has the Gemmer power steering unit? The one on my 880 I had to work on it due to it was leaking also.
I never had one apart before and I thought I give it try anyways. You will need to remove the radiator to work on this. I didnt have a manual at the time but I commenced to do it anyways. If you have a manual look up Gemmer steering gear unit if it has the break down of all the parts listed?
I had no idea they had so many parts in this unit. I played it buy ear and made sure I keep my parts in sequence. Its been 17 yrs ago since I do mine and I see its starting to leak again at the Sector shaft assembly. I cant say it was very easy to work on as I had torn mine completely apart. If yours is only leaking at the sector shaft that not to bad to replace seals. You mentioned that Agco pretty much had no parts available for this? I was thinking the seals should be a stock part? But maybe its not no more? I do know of a couple of places that may stock parts yet but I need to check myself on this also.

Anyways I would look at a parts break down before tearing into it you might have secound thoughts of doing it buy yourself. Good luck and I will check on these parts if theyre still available yet. Mike

This may help. Add a bottle of Seallube to the unit to expand the seals. Lasts for years.
Info at seallube.com
