Have a 1951 oliver 77. Today I was pulling the flywheel off and noticed there was only 5 bolts holding it on. It looks like there should be one more for a total of six bolts. They are a 7/16 20 by 3 inch grade 8 bolt. Could i just put a grade 5 in place of it?? Also my manual does not give a torque spec for the bolts. Any help would be great.

OK, three things.

1) It hadn"t broke with 5 so go ahead and only use 5? No? Why not? Afraid at some time it might shear and make a big mess?

2) Why were 6 grade 8s used in the first place? Why? Were they totally secure with 6 bolts, whatever happened, however quick the flywheel changed speed?

3) How much extra is a proper bolt going to cost? How much aggravation to do the job again? Would cost a complete set of bolts as well!

Do it right. You never know how many horses or rpms someone might expect from the engine and then be right naffed off with you when it comes apart at an inopportune moment. I have had one flywheel shear studs. I was not happy removing car gearbox, filing starter ring and extracting broken bolts from crankshaft just because some cheap character had put it together with mild steel bolts.
