Looking for my next "project" and am new to Oliver. Super 55 for sale down the road is calling my name.
A few questions:
1) Availability of parts?
2) Approximate quantity made?
3) Has hydro. but no 3-point. 3-point available?
4) Good metal. Assume runs. Approximate value?
5) H.P.?
6) Any options to look for?
7) Any potential problems or historical failures to look for?
thanxjc

All parts are out there for a PRICE! I have been to several yards where they were breaking down S55's for parts BECAUSE they are worth much more as parts than whole tractors - Just add up a few of the major componets and you will get the pic! The question that I have is where is the hydralic pump on the one that you are looking at? Up front external? Because the 3 pt hitch cover holds the pump internaly - so I would guess that you will a complete 3 pt. hitch lift cover(includes piston & cylinder, pump, tubing, internal control valve, ect.)and all external 3 pt. hitch parts.
If you want a 3pt. hitch you might do better to find a S55 so equipted to start with. I priced a repair kit for my pump - over $300 - used pumps are worth $250-$400 and are in demand!
Happy New Year & good luck
Pete

Three point hitches are only available as a take-off from a junk tractor. Since few Super 55's or 550's get junked, expect to never find a three point hitch, or if you do, expect to pay $500-$1000 for it.

BTW, the Super 55 became the 550 which became the White 2-44. The tractor was made until 1975!

Price without a 3-point is tough. Are you sure you want that trouble? I would only buy it if I had a three-point hitch lined up or if I was never going to use a three point hitch.

It could be made into a nice all-terrrain forklift though, if the price was cheap enough ($1500 range).

Parts are readily available (except sheet metal and three-point hitches). Watch for a weak PTO clutch, they are expensive to replace ($500 for parts only). The clutch is strong enough, just that the tractor is 40+ years old and those things wear out!

Does it have any hydraulic controls? Are the rear wheels the type that can be widened without removal? Those are both good options. (My Super 55 has both, but I need the sheet metal piece at the front of the hood.)

Parts are not to hard to find other than sheet metal parts. I don't know how many were made, but were made from 54-58. The 550 is almost the same tractor and was made from 58 to 64. I am surprised there is no 3point. Is this an industrial model? Value depends on where you are. They tend to range from $2,500 to $5000 depending on condition and location. Diesel is rated at 28.97hp and the gas at 30.75. External Hydraulics, power steering, swing drawbar, belt pulley, road saftey warning light, and lights are the options available. Check the rear axle seals for leaks, and the steering should be smooth. Most people really like the Super 55. It was way ahead of its time and it is much better than most of the other tractors in its class.
