I just bought an Oliver 880 Diesel Wide front. The side panels show 880 diesel, the exhaust manifold measures 26" long (Oliver 77 D is 24"). But it has a Fiberglass grill. I posted a question some time ago without really looking the tractor over asking if it is an 880 or 770. The gentlemen did find the side panels and the engine is an 880. Is this correct, did Oliver let a few 880 diesels go through with a fiberglass grill? I going along with formenwhogrow it really does look good! If Jeff Weisensel is reading this could you give me a name and or number of the dealer that told you this. I have a few gentlemen that I would like to prove wrong. I would really like this one to shine when its done. One other thing is it has the Oliver oval on the front that has Black lettering if that makes a difference or not. Thanks

Dear olrusty,

I know 880's as well or better than any other Oliver I have ever been around. My family was in the implement business for a time in which I served in the capacity as partsman. I started collecting Olivers in 1971. I have conducted countless hours of research on these tractors.

That all being said, you have received some misinformation reguarding these tractors. First off, the fiberglass grill was introduced at serial number 141901 on the first 770 produced in 1964. 880 production ceased in June of 1962 as far as rowcrop tractors are concerned. If anyone tells you their 880 came with a plastic grill then a dealer installed it. It didn't leave the factory that way.

880's never had the square fenders or trans lube package factory installed either, they were all added later in the field, AFTER they were out of production. The shop manual supplement that covers the trans lube package is dated February 18, 1964. As for the black lettered front emblem, they went to black letters when the decals changed at serial number 112251 in 1961.

Your tractor is a 1958 by serial number,or first year production, an early one at that. I have one that is serial number 122300. As far as I know the last agricultural 880 is serial number 122336. I have yet to find one later than mine.

Hope that helps clear things up.

BLANE.

Hey Blane, thats how you collected that many Olivers 'cause I know your the same age as me and I know how old I was in 1971! Good to see you're still alive and kickin.

The fiberglass grill was introduced after the 880 models were discontinued. I remember being at the sales meeting in Columbus when they told all the dealers if you had a 550 or 770 in stock with the bar type grill and you wanted to update those models to look like the rest of the tractor line kits were available to do that. Does your 880 have a Roosa master injection pump? Are the rear side panels smooth or is there an indentation in there where the decal is placed? Do you have a serial number?

J.
The injector pump is a Bosch pump. But according to the parts book they could have either one. The serial number is 63-319-822 the number on the block is 190320-N. The side panels have the indentation for the decals. Thanks for the info.

I am not thinking tonight, but you will not have nor need the transmission filter package since you have a spur gear transmission. J.

First of all Dad's 88 has the information you asked about so I will not repeat it except for the injection pump. Bosch pumps were used untill Oliver went to Roosa Master pumps. I remember the first 880 we received in 1961. It had the black block style decals but still had the Bosch system. The smaller tractors 550,660 & 770 had the Roosa pump before this. Spend the little bit of money and check with the museum and find the day your tractor was built and how it was equipped. Remember when I mentioned in my post about the plastic grill kits? That was in probably December as Coulumbus was still decorated for Christmas. J.
