I just bought an Oliver 1750 at public auction. I put new plugs and wires in it because it made a "popping" sound at higher rpm's. Sounded like a miss in the engine. I thought it could be out of time, but it purrs at low idle. Can the vaccuum advance that is attached to the distributor be my problem? Please help! Sincere thanks to my respondants!

I had a nice 1750 gas that had the same problem. I tried about everything for two years and did not solve the problem. Finally traded it off. I wish now that I would have tried the Petronix electronic ignition with a 12 volt coil with no internal resistance. I'll be interested in knowing what you find wrong with it. Keep us posted. I was using mine for spraying and had to maintain a constant speed. With it missing half the time, it was very frustrating trying to get the right amount of spray applied.

Could be lots of things from points set far too wide to cam lobe worn away to .... Check plug colour after working it to see if it is too weak at top end .... weak/broken valve spring .... timing off for a multitude of reasons (I have one engine with all the woodruff key-ways loose on the shafts allowing the timing to swing too and fro)....prolly a few more that are possibilities. You just need to check everything until you find what is out of spec. Regards,RAB

You should check the valve lash and if it has the
main jet adjustment screw near the bottom of the carburetor it may need to be opened to enrich the fuel mixture. Hal
PS: I would do a compression check too.
