I am looking to buy an Oliver 2255 and have a couple questions...I understand that the Cat 3208 was standard fit..? and that it went to a larger cubic capacity 3208 in 1974...anyone know at what serial number or any way to tell one from the other..?

On the transmission was the 3 speed power shift the only option..?

Anything to look out for much appreciated, thanks'

I think they are an interesting tractor and not too many around. It was Oliver"s hot rod 2wd for the time. Stu"s right on working it hard. Not too much hydraulic capacity either. Work it a lot on a hot day and she"ll be plenty warm. Use good hydraulic oil and not the farm store stuff. Starter"s a little hard to change also. I believe you shouldn"t do field work with it in over also. I think that clutch is smaller? Maybe the other guys can say if that"s right. It"s what my uncle told me for what it"s worth.

The original 2255 had a 3150 Cat V8. In 1974 the 3208 replaced the 3150. The easiest wat to tell the difference between the two is on the 3150 the injector pump has all eight injector lines in a row. The 3208 had two rows of four. The over/under was an option, but I have never seen or heard of any one with a direct drive 2255. Pay close attention to the axle housings where the bolt into the rear end. I had to replace one, from what I have heard the axle housings on the 2255s,G1355s, and 2-150s had a tendancy to come loose expecially if duals were used. Also there are about $1500 worth of hydraulic hoses so don't under estimate the cost are $100 each on average. The radiators are borderline on capacity with heavy tillage. Hope you have a good truck & trailer they are heavy. Hope this helps, Stu.
