Has anybody removed the oil tube to the water pump and replaced it with a grease fitting? With the pump being lubed with engine oil, the front of the engine gets covered with oil. My 18-28 has a grease fitting and it seems to work. Just wondering if there is any difference in the pumps and if this will work.

That bearing is a porous bronze bushing through which the oil seeps. Your 18-28 probaly has a greasy packing gland. Mine (those with those later pumps) are all like that - at least you know it is getting lubed. I doubt that a grease fitting will do more than accelerate any wear that has already taken place, by blocking the pores in the bearing. I have replaced those oilite bearings but there is still some oil loss.
