I have not had my 1850 desiel started since early last year and this year I noticed a knocking sound that I don't remember from years past. It's coming from the front of the engine but it sounds to high to be a rod at the crankshaft. I see some cover plates on the exhaust side of the engine and it sounds like it is coming from behind the front one. The engine has had some work done on it since before I bought it 5 years ago. There are new gaskets under the intake manifold and the rear cover plate is a primer color instead of green.

It starts and runs good and probably has 8000 hrs on it based on the tach that no longer works. It carries 50 lbs of oil pressure well into the warm up. Is this typical for a Perkins to be a little noisey from this part of the engine or do I need to be looking at something? My other thought is, I believe it's timed by a set of gears at the front of the engine, could this be the source of the knock? My other thought is a wrist pin. Any information is helpful. Thanks kwg

Sorry about the delay getting back. I checked the water pump and it looks to be running true and no leaks. I'll check that damper bolt but the noise doesn't seem to be from that. Can a person take off that cover and adjust the push rod from there? I get the feeling it's a push rod or something similar but, other wise the engine does run smoothly. I'm just guessing but I assume the lifters are solid and not hydraulic. Yea, I know find an engine book somewhere. Thanks for the responses. kwg

Check the front balancer bolt.Notorious for coming loose on the Perkins 354.If loose, some things will need to come off the front.

We use HD air impacts to get them tight as hell.....and then some.Seen too many come loose.Sometimes wrecking the crank.~brad

I expected you"d have had some good respounces by this time.
A lot of hours on your engine. You have not run it for some time. You didn"t mention if it were running smoothly otherwise?
My thoughts go to dried out (oil has drained down)? Maybe push rod or tappint noise do to sticking valve? Fuel pump on right side? Piston lap? Loose or dry wrist pin? Water pump running true? Damper pully tight? It is hard to imagine a rod, piston wrist pin, whatever has worn out or loosened just sitting still. So, here"s an admitted few guesses to concider. Good luck with your engine.

I'm with you Fern, mystery to me. I was cutting hay once and mine cut loose hammering like you can't believe. It had had a broken ring for so long that it finally spit it out the top and started hammering it against the head, but that wasn't a LITTLE noise. The only thing I can think if it's been sitting would be the water pump. Don't know, good luck.
