Just fishing here a tad, but I believe I may know what the problem is. I bought my 77 when the snow was abundant. Now it's gone. I've drilled the owners (my cousin) with every question I could think of. They are not mechanically inclined at all. In talking with them, I found out it runs good until it warms up, then it starts bucking and snorting until it dies. Sounds electrical to me. I had a 2 cyl JD sound like it wanted to come apart until I put a new coil on it.

I checked it out and found the sediment bowl assy was toast. Sent off to S&B for a new one. Ordered and received points, rotor, and condenser. I bought a new battery and picked up a new coil also. I also found it to be converted to a 12 volt neg ground. It also has an alt on it. The engine turns over nice, but no spark thru the points make me think more and more electrical.

The tractor was used up to oct of 06 in the hayfield and around their farm. I hope I'm going in the right direction. How about it guys? I know what I'm replacing needs replacing. I'll more than likely replace all of the ignition wiring while I'm at it.

My 53 77 Oliver did the same thing. I went thru a lot of plugs and wires untill I found the problem. It had a hair line crack in th intake Manifold and the warmer the eng. the bigger the crack. Therefore it run like a chevy very bad.

Thanks for the heads up Luther. Now that you mention it, I do remember a comment about the manifold. I'll check it out.

Sorry, forgot to mention the cap come with the points, ect. I was going to try the hotwire thing just to see. I've wired up many a street rod, so doing the new wire thing isn't a problem. I'm getting a little excited, as this tractor has some work to do! I'm reclaiming a 40 acre field that has been dormant for the last 45 years and has started to revert back to spruce trees and tagalter brush. I may be busy awhile.

40 acres and a 77 to clean it up yep you will be a very busy guy, depending on how big the trees are. In the long run you might be better off $$ wise to hire a bull dozer to come in and clean it up first then use the 77 to keep it that way. BTDT and it takes a lot of time and $$ to do mush to trees with a farm tractor.

One way to figure it out is hot wire it. If when hot wired you have a good spark at the coil wire then you have a wireing problem from the coil back. If you still don't have spark you have a problem in the distubutor area. Also you should replace the cap when you replace the rotor of you have miss matched parts there. Also a cap can get cracks in it that are to small to see and it then shorts out the spark before it gets to the plugs.
