Hey Folks, Bought this Oliver 77 GAS 2 weeks ago at a auction sale, runs REAL good as idle or just driving around, but as soon as you open the throttle from idle to wide open it cuts out sputters FARTS and sometimes backfires through the carb, sometimes stalls. If you go from idle to wide open slowly, she works the very best! also does the same when sudden loads are applied I.E. ride the brakes. I took for a long drive down the road (20 min or so) and it seemed a little better. I have cleaned the carb changed plugs, tryed adjusting timing, Cap and points look new. WHAT NEXT??, I can't see it being low compression or it would only get worse as it gets warm am I would assume?
She starts like a new one everytime. What should I try next?

Hope you could follow this

Hope the pics work too!!

Thanks guys
Matt

Matt I have a 770 with a Marvel S carb that had the same trouble for years, let the clutch out to fast and it would die or sputter. I went over the carb numerous times, went over the distributor and everthing else. No help untill I broke the bottom adjustor one day. I went to the tractor parts store to get another one which he didn't have but I found a plug from a 45 John Deere combine that fit the hole as I needed to use the tractor that day. That was the end of the sputtering. I still have that plug in there 5 years later. I can't adjust the high speed fuel and it runs a little rich (just a yard and woods tractor). I should put in a little smaller main jet but haven't gotten around to it yet. If you leave that jet in there pull it out and clean the area in the carb around it. That area holds a little extra fuel that is sucked in when the throttle is opened. (mine has a lot of extra fuel with no valve in there) If there is some scale or rust in that area there's less room for extra fuel. Steve

Flush fuel system and re-clean the carb. Your jet settings are pry off right now, and you got some crap in the carb. Do those things and let us know what it does.

try el toro's idea first. Had the same problem yesterday with with an oliver with an after market adjusting jet. Put in a spare out of an old original carb fired it and adjusted under load and didn't miss a lick all afternoon.

You may need to open the main jet adjusting screw
if it has one near the bottom of the carburetor.
It may be running a little too lean. This will enrich the fuel mixture that's required when pulling heavy implements. Hal

Is their crud in the fuel tank? Is the fuel line un-obstructed? My gut tells me you have a fuel flow issue.

Also....Are the timing advance weights in the distributor free? Are the points new or do they just look new? I've had issues with poor quality points from Mexico not lasting long. You might want to consider putting in a Pertronix electronic ignition set right out of the gate to save yourself a lot of trouble. It doesn't take long buying premium $15-$20 point sets to pay for the kit.
