Cletrac 12 volt conversion woes...

I have a 1941 Cletrac with a 12 volt conversion. My problem is I keep cooking solinoids and if bypassed the plastic on the cables melts. Huge resistance somewheres. I"m guessing that the weakeswt link of the resistance is in the solinoid. Researching this I can"t find other posts on this problem. Fortunatly solinoids come cheap at the local wrecking yard but cables aren"t as cheap. Thanks in advance for input.....

It sounds more like a high current draw situation, or SHORT than a "high resistance" problem.

What engine are we starting? Does it still have the original 6-Volt starter on it? Has it been checked out? Could the starter drive be getting jammed into the ring gear, so the starter can't crank the engine?

What sort of starter solenoid are you using, and what size are the battery cables?

thanks for the quick response...I have a 6 volt starter and just replaced the field coils. It cranks fast and I'm using Ford solonoids from full sized cars from the 80's. The reason I'm thinking resistance issues is that wherever the weak spot is where the heat is. If the connection or the condition of the cable has been deteriated that is where the heat is. Always on one side of the solinoid connection. Never at the stud of the starter or the battery post itself. I have the Hercules 123 engine and again it cranks well just I can't crank the engine for more than 10 seconds or so without overheating. Again thanks for the response..

By Hercules 123 do you mean an IXK engine in an HG? If you do it should not take much to turn that engine over. Remember when you go to 12 volts you cut your amperage to do the job in half. When you take the starter off and crank it with 12 volts how does it turn? Next do you have a front mounted (crankshaft driven) hydraulic pump? If you take the starter off how easy does the flywheel turn? Do you have acess to an induction type amp meter to measure current draw?

Thanks for the input. Yes it's the Hercules from a HG. It has a front mount hydraulic pump and the engine turns pretty freely. The starter works well on the bench and cranks the engine easily. As far as a amp meter I have one that is a multi-tester but not sure what an inductive one is. The starter is 6 volt but it has a 12 volt generator and regulater. When running my amp meter on the crawler shows charge and a voltmeter shows about 14 volts to the battery. The only solinoid and cable overheating occurs while cranking the engine over. Thanks again
