Oliver 1855 Injection Pump Issues???????

Good Afternoon, I recently tore down my 1855 for paint. However, when doing so, I also decided to bite the bullet and have the injection pump rebuilt. Diesel prices are up and so was the leakage from the pump. Anyway, I put the freshly rebuilt pump on the tractor, got the air out of the system and took the tractor for a ride. The first mile was pretty smooth. I took pride in the freshly painted machine. Then it happened, the tractor began to slightly miss, then terribly miss then started shooting flames out the exhaust before I got it parked to evaluate what the issue could. It almost seems as if the tractor slipped time, but how could this be possible on a gear driven pump? The tractor will not run now. However, it turns over smooth with no excess noise coming from the engine. It does give off a little white smoke while trying to start. Any suggestions or questions would be appreciated before I take the pump off and have it rechecked. I just do not understand how it could go from running smooth to terrible to nothing. By the way, all the fuel filters and hoses are new.

Thanks
Shaun Murray

Take the timing gear cover off and see if the two bolts in the pump timing gear are still tight.Did you run wire through the bolt heads? It does sound like it jumped time.If the pump shaft snapped ,it should have quit running quickly. Also take the timing window from the side of the pump, turn the engine over ,see if the pump head is turning.

The bolts are tight and yes I did put wire through them. I took the cover off and the head is turning freely. Diesel fuel came out rather quickly when the cover was off. Is this normal? Thanks in advance and any help is appreciated.

I would check all timing marks again, take a injector line off ,see if it shoots fuel.Does your 1855 have the cam operated fuel pump on the right side ? some didn't, they were a pain to prime.Sounds like you have good fuel supply If lots of fuel ran from the timing window. It could be the injection pump needs taken off and rechecked.Sorry I am not more help.

I do not have a lift pump and I do have fuel at the injectors. I wish it did have lift pump as it is hard to get the air out. That is why I am hesistant to take the pump off and have it rechecked. I will try to retime the engine and go from there. I appreciate the help. If anyone else has any questions or comments I would appreciate any assistance. Problems like this one tend to raise my frustration level pretty quickly. Some things so simple, yet complicated.

Thanks
Shaun

I'd follow WB's advise below and have it gone through again.

As far as bleeding is concerned, how much fuel is in the tank? If it's below the 1/2 mark, it'll be a little harder to bleed, but if it's full you shouldn't have any troubles at all bleeding it. I've had to bleed our 1855 a few times after changine fuel filters and it was no problem at all. Just crack the bleeder screw and wait for it to run clear of bubbles. It's easier than doing our Massey 285 w/ a lift pump as far as I'm concerned, but even that one wasn't too bad, just a little more involved plus the cam has to be in the right place so the plunger has a full stroke...

It's possible the "flex ring" inside the pump could have broke. It would still pump fuel but be out of time, since it happened gradually the ring started to tear and then let loose. I'd take it back to the pump shop and let them go through it again. WB.
