I just bought a 4340. The tag for the serial # is nearly gone on the bottom but I got 11897 from the serial #. Is this enough to tell me what the year may be. Also how long were they produced? Looks like a good solid plow. Thanks in advance.

I remember a very wet spring in late 60's or possibly as late as 1970 , we could not pull our what we thought at the time were "HEAVY" 566 plows so dad went to our local dealer ( close to SB plant ) and they got new from the factory a 4-16 4340 so we could plow . Wish I had it today ! when it went to scrap in the mid 70's it only had plowed several hundred acres..."make-in" me cry now

Where is the serial number tag located on the 4340 plow? I have a 4340 plow but cannot locate a tag on it.

My tag is on the middle beam right above the hitch mount. It's only a decal and probably won't make it much longer. Your's is probably long gone if you haven't seen it. I'm surprised it's not a metal tag but that's how it was then.

To add a little bit to that, the serial numbers came in a can like a 46 ounce tin can. This was true for other implements such as disks as well. The serial number tag plus all the little hardware was in that can. Where I worked we placed them in a bin. So for us that can might have been there a year or two before we ever put an implement together and needed that can. We hauled directly out of South Bend so sometimes the implements on the load were even for the next season. Also for our area when the 1600 was introduced the potential list of buyers for new pull type small plows was about over as now you were trading in some tractors and plows that were less than 5 years old in on new 1600 tractors with either semimounted or the new fully mounted 360 plows. Model 100 plow master that were traded in were sold to a man that would buy them for $25.0 each and he would put them on his pick up and sell them I think in KY.J.

Mark, I can't help you with your serial number.

Oliver announced the three digit tractor models in 1958. They also announced five new models of plows at the same time. The model 4340 was one of those plows. Oliver sold that model into the early 70's, even though they stopped advertising them before that.

Oliver built different models of 2 and 3 bottom pull type plows for over 50 years. The 4340 was the last 3 bottom pull type plow that Oliver built. In the late 60's early 70's the trend was for big plows, so there wasn't a market for a plow of that size anymore. That goes for all brands of pull type 2 and 3 bottom plows, not just Oliver.
