Is electronic ignition modification worth the money?

Hello to all,

I have an Oliver 77 that I use to push snow. It runs great and is a real powerhouse. It starts ok in moderatly cold temperatures, but not so good when it gets down to zero or below. Unfortunatly that's where the temperature often goes after a big snow here in Iowa. I have 10 weight oil and a big, new battery so the engine turns over well enough it should start or at least try to start. Does this sound like the sort of thing that one of the electronic ignition kits might help? Thanks for any input!

My experience has been a stock ignition properly maintained offers no real advantage over electronic ignition - at least at the RPMS a stock tractor motor runs. Just make sure all the ignition parts are in good shape. And if the ignition primarly circuit is equipped with a ballast resistor, make sure the starter bypass around the resistor is wired correctly.

One suggestion however: Substitute 5W-20 oil for straight #10 in winter. The motor will crank over faster and start easier in sub-zero temperatures.

Two things: One, yes electornic ignition is a good thing, Got down to the autoparts store and buy a MSD 6A. Only. Two, If you don't have a wire on your 77 running around your ballast resistor now while the starter is in gear you may be cheating yourself. This is what makes the coil fire a hotter spark when the starter is working. Later

Do you think you need a rev limiter? The loosest rpm chip they make is 3000 rpm. I wouldn't want to see most of these old motors at 3000. It is pricey too. For a farm tractor the off road with the shock mounts should be plenty. I seen them mounted with hose clamps, not shock mounted held up ok.

Which ever you want. The base 6A costs 126.00. The off road or drag version are more expensive. Shock mounting the unit would be better though.
