Howdy....I just recently bought a 1944 Oliver70 Row Crop 6 cyl with a 6 volt system. I"m wondering if I could put in an 8 volt battery to give it a little extra power to start it up. A knowledgeble local tractor guy made this suggestion. What do you think? Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you.

You can definately put a 8 volt battery in the tractor! The benefit to this will be extra cranking power plus stonger glow out of the lights if desired. I also agree with the other comments posted on this topic! If you go with the 8 volt system you will need to adjust the generator in order to maintain the 8 volt. I currently have 8 volts in 2 of my Oliver tractors
( Oliver Hart-Parr 70 & Row Crop 88 ). Over the winter they have drained down to where they wouldn't start the tractors. I removed them and took them to a Interstate Battery dealer where he has the means to charge them. This was a solution to the charging an 8 volt problem for me. All in all I feel that either the 6 or the 8 volt system is a viable option. Like mentioned earlier the KEY to either system is good cables and excellent connections. The 8 volt system is not a solution to a 6 volt system NOT working. There will be something else WRONG with the system NOT the battery entirely!! The main reason I prefer the 8 volt system is a Brighter lighting system. This way I have stronger lights while staying original with the equipment. Hope this helps!

I had an 8 volt battery in one of my 70's years ago. Probably 30 years ago. Seamed to be ok. Never had any problems with the eight volt.

Useing an 8 volt battery is a bandaide fix for other problems and in the long run causes more problems then worth. Your genny at best unless worked on will not keep it charged up, plus have you ever seen an 8 volt battery charger?? Stay with 6 volts or do it right and switch it to 12 volts so you will have it done right and be easy to work on. I had a 77 I sold a couple years ago on 6 volts and it would start any time of year didn't matter if it was 10 degrees out or 90, so if your system is as good as it should be it will work just fine on 6 volts and shoot it has for the past 50 plus years so why change it?????

Yes, you can use the 8 volt battery, but the comment below is correct about not having it fully charged. You need to increase the voltage control on the voltage regulator. A good genarator/starter shop could set it up for you.

This was very common practice and your generator should keep the 8 volt charged

I've never tried it. I've been told by somebody that did, that you can't ever get a full charge in an 8 volt. Like I suggested on another post, don't underestimate what the right battery cables will do. I found this out on my 66,so I changed my 70 BACK from 12 to 6 volt. They need to be 2.0 guage. You loose 2/3 of your amperage with smaller cables and a 6 volt battery. Also, make the ground cable long enough to ground to the bellhousing where the starter bolts on. It will whirl like a 12 volt, guaranteed. So that's one for the 8 volt, one against.
