On a 310 diesel, where is the original location of the lifting head bolts? I have 3 engines with 3 different locations.
What do you use for a lifting connection? The thread is 9/16 fine. I'm toying with a couple of ideas on fabricating something to use to lift the engine. There is not much room between the bolt and the rocker arm cover.

I just took 2 regulaer 1/2-13 nuts and welded a 6" length of chain to them to lift out the 1600's engine. I know it's not the best method and it could have done some serious damage if they broke, but they worked quite well to take it out and put it back in...

What you could do is fab something up. I would think a peice of 1" hex stock or maybe smaller with the threads in it, welded to a heavy lifting ring, or fastened in some other fashion if your welds aren't the greatest. You could even get a male threaded eye and have the 2 different threads in the hex peice, just something to convert to a more common thread.

 Lifting 310` in reply to Don-Wi, 04-06-2007 17:18:39
The problem is there is not much room between the lifting bolt and the fuel lines on one side and the rocker arm cover on the other. I've seen pictures of the eye nut I want but haven't seen one in 9/16" fine.
For now, I'm having a piece fabricated.

I think I removed the valve cover before lifting it out, but then I managed to clear it putting it back in. The engine shop did put the bolts in the wrong locations though...

Get yourself a good lifting eye from some industrial supply house.

Eye nut in reply to J Schwiebert, 04-06-2007 09:13:44
I looked all over the internet and can't find an eye nut in 9/16" fine. Any tips on where to find one would be appreciated.

Well I first starting doing this was with the Power Booster program. The guys from Charles City had "home made" so to say lifting eves. Get your self some round or hex bar stock about an inch in diameter and drill and tap it for the head bolt. Then drill a hole cross wise about an inch from the other end and bend say like a 1/2 inch ring and insert throught the drilled hole. Weld each end to the bar stock. That is what they had. The eyebolt I did look up was in a catalof at the local hardware store. J.

Forgot to say that 1/2 inch eye was the diameter of the rod. Diameter of the ring was about 4 inches. Sorry about that. J.
