Hey guys! Well, I'm needing some advice/help in order to get my Super 55 (gas) charging properly.

When I purchased the tractor, the battery was dead. Two batteries, two generators, a voltage regulator, and new wiring later, I'm still not getting my battery to charge.

After trying a different (used) generator, a new voltage regulator, and still not getting the battery to charge, I looked into the wiring. It was a mess and was set up on a negative ground battery but everything else hooked up like a standard positive ground system. I rewired everything for positive ground.

The generators I've used were used, but have voltage output of around 12volts. I'm wondering if I'm just not getting the amperage out of the generators to get the battery charged, or if someting has fried along the way that won't let it happen either. The tractor starts fine and runs fine, just no juice to the battery from the generator.

I only have an IT manual (not enough funds to purchase a full set) so I don't have access to proper wiring diagrams. It is a 12-volt system having everything converted and updated. Can someone point me in the right direction or at least give me some pointers as to which alternators would work best and have the cleanest installation? I'm needing a reliable tractor, not an accurate restoration piece.

As for the details, as I said, it's a fully converted 12-volt system. I do have power steering, but it's off of a separate pully/pump and not an extra pully off of the generator (ie: uses a standard generator set-up). It's a 1955 Super 55 gas that has been updated in almost every way from power steering, to the 550 hydraulic cover. If you need any other information to get me on my way, let me know and I'll post it. Feel free to email me or post on this thread, but I'm needing help as quickly as possible since this is my weekly mower and mowing season is upon us!

Thanks,
Justin

When you purchased the new regulator you should have received the instructions on flashing the field on the regulator. This is required so your system will charge. You should have somewhere around 14.0 to 14.5 volts charge at your batteries. Hal

Hal,

Thanks for the response. The generator I purchased was a used generator from a working tractor. It did not come with any instructions as far as flashing the field on the regulator.

I did look up the polarizing technique on the internet and did do this each time I disconnected the battery (or had it so low that I had to jump it), so I don't believe this is the issue. From what I understood about polarization, you simply used a jumper wire between the "A" lead and the "Bat" lead to do so. Is this correct?

Thanks,
Justin

Generator is polarized with the battery installed,
momentarily connect the Bat and Gen terminals at the regulator. Hal

I think that would have still been a positive ground system, somebody correct me if i'm wrong. Here's a little trick for you to try. It is for cold weather when you don't run it long enough to put a full charge back in the battery every time. Polarize your generator first of course, then unhook the wire to the "B" terminal on the regulator and connect it to the "L" terminal. If it works, just don't leave it there permanantly,it will over charge the battery. What it does is bypass the regulator.

Don't have the regulator in question to look at, but on a standard regulator (with Bat, Gen and Fld terminals), to bypass you have to ground the field (fld), and then connect jumper from bat to gen terminals. You should get a charge on the ammeter, with charge rate proportional to engine RPM. Don't know what the L terminal is.

I got that right out of the Super 55 owners manual.
