Just bought a 880 diesel. Temp is 70-80 degrees. Have to ether it to start. It runs terrific with no smoke and lots of power. Shut it off wait few minutes it will start right back up. Wait say 30 minutes have to ether it again. Any suggestions, worn out pump, low compression, need to advance timing? The heater is not working that is my first objective, but still at these temps should fire right up I would think.
thanks

If it starts when it is hot you head in the injection pump is good. Check transfer pump pressure. If it is good go for compression probably a minimum of 100 psi low.

See page 7 under post titled "SUPER 88 D". About half way or more down the page.

Is that the one about the primary fuel pump Blaine? I'd about bet that that's the problem.

Yep, lots of good info on that topic. Covers just about anything it could be and we don't have to re-type it all! A real bonus for a hunt and peck guy like myself!!!

Do you get white smoke when you try it without ether?
If you do, your pump is probably ok...and you would be looking at a compression or timing issue, but more likely compression.
