I have an Oliver 1650 gas with power steering issues. The problem is no power steering, it has the volley ball shaped power steering unit under the column. The problem developed after sitting for a while. There is no power steering with or with out the engine running, no movement on the front tire, steering wheel just spins. Hydraulics and three point hitch work fine. Is there a kit for the power steering unit or does it have to be refit or updated, is there a valve under the seat I should ivestigate first? If I need a new power steering unit where can I find one.

I would have sworn to high heaven that it was something hydraulic in my 1850 when the shaft from the steering unit up front, down to the steering arm, where the tie rods connect, broke. I backed the feed grinder in to the tool shed, shut the tractor off, unhooked, got back on and started it up and had no steering. There was no undue stress on it or anything, just had been cracked for a long time and chose that time to break. I saw a 1650 on an auction 2 years ago that went the same way. They said it was working, then all of a sudden it didn't. Same problem.

The first thing is to check for a broken flow divider spring. This is the small valve by your left heal. Remove the plug or the three bolts to the rear of the valve and pull out the spring, most likely its broken. If you need to use it right away turn both flat outside ends of the spring in together and reinstall. this will work untill you get a new one.

I unscrewed the plug revealing the small valve behing my left heal, the spring didn't pop out so I removed it and it appears to be intact. I was wondering when the plug was unscrewed should the spring have pushed its self out? Maybe my spring doesn't have enough spring left?

The spring free length is 2 27/32, it only sticks out alittle. You do have to push in on the plug to get it back on. If your steeringwheel turns easy i would agree with the other poster that the inner steering colnm may be broke or worn. There are vanes and stuff in the unit so you can steer manually when the engine is not running. All this stuff creates alot of drag.

I took the steering column off and what is refered to as the outter shaft, well the splines are worn out. This is the shaft inside the column which would go over the splines on the hydramotor. Is there a place online to look for parts, Is it an easy fix?
