I have two Olivers. 1800 & 1850. Both have 1800 motors in them. Both need work. I found a Perkins diesel out of a Massey Ferguson, 354 cubic inch. Will it fit in the oliver 1850? The oliver 1850 has a different frame than the 1800. I need to know if the 1850 is a true 1850 for the perkins diesel. The model number is 18-1124 and serial number is 124-393-892. Will this 354 Perkins engine work in the 1850 & will the bell housing also work or does anyone have a good perkins diesel that will fit the 1850 frame? Please email me.
Thank you,
Paul

OK, I'm cornfused. 1800 has a Waukesha and 1850 has a perkins. If your tractor both have 1800 motors, then you need to check serial #'s to be sure it's a 1850. you would have to have a 1800 front tub to put a 1800 motor in a 1850. If it is a 1850 and has 1850 front tub it wouldn't be that hard to do. I put 354 out of a 750 MF in my 1850. You basically use the MF block and heads and everything else needs to be taken off the Oliver motor and put on the MF. Go back in the archive, my 1850 is shown with MF motor in it.

Sorry, I clicked too soon. The 1800 has 4 bolts that hold motor. 2 on each side. the 1850 has 3, 2 on the back and 1 in front under crankshaft. Chris

I don't want to start anything with anybody about what will fit and what won't,but I put one out of a White 8900 combine in mine 2 years ago. Problem is,even replacing a Perkins from the 1850 with one from the combine, and yes,the Massey combine engine will work too,but you need your old engine for all the parts. I'm going to get tired of typing by the time I tell you what you need off the tractor engine. You need pan,oil pump plumbing, oil filter housing, timing cover, fly wheel, bell housing, water pump, rear side cover, tappet cover, manifold, injector lines, injector pump throttle plate,I know I'm forgetting something, but pretty much all that you can use is the block with the innards and the head.

It has been a long day, sometimes you just have to wonder why you even got out of bed.

On to your question. I think your 1850 is actually an 1800. Based on the serial number and spec number you posted, your tractor is the 3rd from the last "A" series 1800 made. It also originally had a gas engine and narrow front. I'm trying to understand, did you say the frame is different on this tractor than your other 1800? If it is someone swapped the frame from an 1850 diesel, but if they both have 1800 engines in them the frame swap doesn't add up. Like I said, long day. Please supply more info.

I need to go check on an Oliver I put in "time out", it wasn't playing nice.

The short answer is NO! The Massey 354 although being a very close relative has a different block designed for the Massey Tractor. The 354's that came in the Ollies and Cockshutts were build for the tub they slid into. I think the biggest difference is the trunion mount used on the Ollies.

Now that is not to say you can not make it work but the general concensous is that if you have to make a bunch of additional mods you may as well go with a modern engine like the Cummins 5.9L. There are lots of posts regarding repower of 1850's in the archives of this site.
