a friend of mine has a 55 super diesel that hasn"t had the oil changed in the transmission and rearend in quite some time. after removing the plugs we found some water in the oil. does the rearend take 80-90w and the transmission use hydraulic? He is not sure what type of oil was in the tractor and has no manual to tell him. also where does the hydraulic unit on top of the transmission drain? any info greatly appreciated.

How many drain plugs did you remove? There should be 3. Transmission and final drives take the same oil. 80-90 is fine. Check plug is beside the PTO shaft (small pipe plug). Hydraulic unit is self contained and it is pumped out. If you have a remote valve just unscrew one of the hoses, stick it in a bucket and start tractor and move the handle one way or the other. If not there is a little casting on the side held on with 3 cap screws. There is a pipe plug there. Remove pipe plug install short hose and put that in the bucket. Also change the filter. Now the filters are not the same. If your filter is on the front you have a later unit and you may need to go to an Agco dealer for parts. More questions/ J.

thanks j.s., the filter on this tractor is on the side. taking the hydraulic hose off is a good idea. i will tell him to try that. this hydraulic unit must have been an option? also is the steering box for this trator have power steering? looking at it it almost looks like a powered unit.

Well 50/50 chance or less that it has Power Steering. Also the original units were made by CharLynn and did not have external cylinders. Does the generator have a hydraulic pump mounted in the back? You need to have to have hoses going to the unit. J.
