Anyone use an Oliver 77 to run a small square baler? Do all 77s have live pto? I guess what i'm really looking for here is a good excuse to buy a 77.

When I was a youngun we would have loved to have a tractor as big as a 77 to bale with. We used the 66 because it had live PTO. Used it on everything from a New Holland 66 to an IH 46 with a thrower, even a big old New Holland 77 with a Wisconsin motor.Yes,77s all had live power.

We used a 77 on a IH 45 baler and later on a Oliver 60t. To me it ran great and cause no problems in the power end. I forget how years we used it but we sold both baler and tractor in 1970 when Dad and Mom decided on quitting farming. Baled many bales of hay and straw with the 77 and 60t baler.

I usually try to have each hay implement hooked to a different tractor, so I'm not continually changing stuff. Mower and rake don't matter much which tractor, but the baler is always on an Oliver. You just can't beat that independent PTO for baling. And the 77 will handle it just fine. Only thing better would be a 4 digit Oliver, with hydra-power drive, so you could pull down your tractor speed in the heavy spots, without wearing out the clutch.

Mike I'm with you on useing more then one tractor for haying. When I do my hay I have my Oliver 77 hooked up to my NH460 MOCO, and my S88 hooked up to my NH850 blaer then hook the rake up to which ever tractor I want to give a little work out to. I switch the rake around a lot just so I can run a few of my tractors but the 77 and S88 stay hooked up to the NH equipment till haying is doe and over with for the year

A 77 is a very good tractor for a square baler. I used one for years pulling a JD-14T and it played with it. Before that I used a Ford 841 and it worked the 841 hard. Funny thing is the 841 by NEB. test is 45 HP and the 77 is 38HP but the 77 played with the baler. So I guess what I'm saying is that if you buy a 77 you will like it for a baler tractor. I now use a Super 88 to pull a round baler and it does a real good job of doing that also

my 901 had a little trouble pulling the JD 336 that I used to have. Or maybe it was the 150 bales on the wagon behind the 336. Or maybe it was just the steep hill.

I have spent a lot of time with a 77 on a square baler. The live PTO of the time was one of the best. We used ours with a JD 116W baler. I've also used it on a NH 77. No problems if the pto is in good working condition.

I use 2 770's to make hay. The one with the hydra power is always on the baler. Never had a problem yet.
