Oliver 550 Information.....This isn't Oliver Land

I'm looking for a utility tractor and I was wondering about the 550 Oliver. I'm not very familiar with them except I noticed in a tractor book they were built from 1958-1975. Did they basically remain the same all those years of production? What features do they have and how handy are they?What would would one be worth in decent shape?Any info would be appreciated. As you can tell this isn't Oliver country...mostly John Deeres, Farmalls and a lot of old 8N's and Jubilees.....

Sometime during the early 60's Oliver switched to a Roosa Master injector pump which is many times better than the American Bosch pump. If you are have a selection to choose from try to get one with the Roosa Master pump. But I would not turn it down just because of a Bosch either the swap is easy. Like the others have said I have never heard of a transmission problem either other than it is much easier to change gears than most.

This is news to me I have never heard of a roosa master pump being bettor than a bosch.In what way are they bettor?they are alot cheaper but you get what you pay for.

From my experience, both work well. The main difference is when it come to rebuild time. Roosa's can get a total re-do for approximately $300, the Bosch will run closer to $1000 if they re-use some parts. Does that make it better or worse? You tell me. With the decreasing amounts of sulfur allowed in diesel nowadays, I bet we will be seeing alot more pump failures so it may mean more to be the less exspensive overhaul. My opinion.

The 550 was unchanged (pretty much) for the whole production run. Mild changes were like switching from a steel grill to fiberglass and the early ones had a slightly different clutch and govenor which was a carry over from the Super 55. All have 3pt and an optional draw bar, draft contol (and some had the ability to disable it and use as a standard 3pt), live PTO, live hydraulics and enough power to turn a Ford owner "blue" with envy. They came as either gas or diesel, manual or power steering, and some have remote hydraulics (which can be bolted on to any of them for a price). They have 6 forward speeds and 2 in reverse. Parts are still available and these are very usable tractors. In my area (southern Indiana) they go for $2500 (on a lucky day) to $4800. Even at the high side of the scale these tractors are cheap horsepower. A word to the wise is if your needs require you to have power steering...buy one with it already on it. The idea of "I'll just add one on later" will find you in a high stakes bidding war trying to aquire a very sellable item in a sellers market.

I've heard that the transmission gave a lot trouble, getting hung in gear, etc.

None I've been on. Maybe someone else has some info on it, but I haven't even heard of that happening.
