I have an 880 that shifts good and does not pop out of gear. However when descending a steep grade in reverse (trailer) it acts like it is coming out of gear (freewheels) and makes a slight grinding noise in the tranny, until I get on level ground. It is a helical gear model with no power booster. I've had the cover off but see nothing obvious. All other gears work good and it does not do it in forword. Any ideas?

Kman,
I"m problably not much help on this, which range is reverse acting up Hi or Low? I have a 880 W/Helical gear trans. I"m no exspert buy any means on the Helical trans.
I had problems on the with Hi range 6th gear as the shifter wants to creap back out of 6th range when slowing down on a steap grade or hill. I found the pinion shaft nut had worked it way loose and allowing the gear assembly travel back and forth.
As I had it torn down I put some new bearings an seals in. I also found on the main and counter shaft the end-play was real bad also. Took up end-play bye removing shims. Tolerence if I remember correctly .001 to .003 end-play. I wished I had a book on this type tranmission but no luck finding one.
My hard part was finding part for the pump that lubes the transmission. Dealer told me NLA. But I found one a different way new. Hopefully someone will give you the exact answer you need. Mike

I think it does it in both ranges although I am usually in low backing down off something if I have to(I try to load it backed onto a trailer so I can drive forward off). I was thinking I've got some slop somewhere and heard of the 880's kicking out of 6th gear but my shifting lever never pops out. It seems like a gear mesh problem that only happens when the drive wheels are actually pushing the opposite way on everything(steep grade) but stays meshed in when the engine is driving everything on level ground or uphill.

Take the hydraulic unit off and also the front cover of the bevel pinon shaft. Something on the pinon shaft has tooo much endplay. Also check the endplay and bearings on all the shafts. More questions? Let me think about it for a day or so. J.

John, isn"t there a thrust washer of some sort on the pinion shaft that can break and fall out of there also that could cause excessive end play?

I do this by memory on tractors made in Charles City. I was trying to think if there were one or 2 plus a snap ring. Maybe I can look later today. J.

Dads88, & ejr-IA
I had my 880 close to 18 yrs now. The last person that had it didn't take very good care of it. When I got it home I drove it off the trailer and my fiend Don said before you go any further with it you should check to see if the helical transmission is getting any oil. He unscrewed the oil filter and I started it and no oil, not one drop came out. He said shut it off and get me a 9 1/6 wrench. I got him a wrench he took the pump off the front of the transmission and there it was this (I call the star gear) in the pump was busted in three pieces. At the time I new nothing about the helical transmissions.
Don said when you go to the white dealer ask if they had one in stock. I drove about 55 miles to the dealer and asked the parts man if he had this in stock. He said this part is no longer available. Well I wasnt a very happy camper after hearing that. I stopped over to my friends house on the way back from Maumee and told him about my dilemma. He said he had a part that I needed, but told me he really didnt want to part with it. Well I couldnt say as I blame him he farms a lot a ground with his 880. I felt like I fell into a bees nest on this tractor. At the time I didnt have a computer and I done some checking around the countryside for a pump. No luck.
Couple days later my friend calls up and asks me whens the next time you going to Maumee? Told him tomorrow. He said ask them down there to look up the part that I was needing in the 1600,1650s parts book as his parts book show it looking like it the same parts internally. I guess the four digit series had the pumps on the inside of the transmission? Well I did ask the parts man if the 1600s and 1650s part was the same as the 880s internally he said no the part number are different. I asked him if he had one in stock so he looks it up and goes to the back and brings back this pump gear and its exactly the same part as what I needed.
Boy I was so excited I told him Id give him a kiss if no one would talk about it. It wasnt cheap part but at the time I didnt care. I even bought a few more parts that day for it.

I'm inclined to think the same thing also. I think what could be happening is the sliding coupling is working it's way off of the drive hub of the output gears or in Mike's case reversing gear because of excessive end play in the bevel pinion shaft. I have a very late 880, S/N 122300. Research I've done at Charles City shows the last agricultural 880 as S/N 122336, any after that were industrial or power pak. Anyway I was pulling a three bottom plow in 4th gear in 4 year old alfalfa. Can you say roots as big as your.....never mind. So I'm just be-boppin' along in utter amazement at the shear power of this thing (had never plowed with it before) when all of a sudden...BANG! I ate the steering wheel. Did have the presence of mind to stab the clutch as I slid foward. Took it out of gear and slowly lifted my foot on the clutch and it wanted to die. Left my foot on the clutch until it cooled down enough to shut it off. Grabbed a neighbor and we pulled it in from the field with my foot on the clutch. This tractor had the field installed pressure lubrication package also. Turned out the low range input gear had seized tight to the input shaft. Thought we should tear it all down after something like that to make sure nothing else got busted. Found an acre of end play in all three shafts and LOTS of nasty parts. To top it all off the input shaft front bearing bore was kind of hammered out so we ended up gutting it and sending the rear end housing to town to get bored and sleeved, WOW! Did that end up being an expensive proposition. Would probably not have spent that kind of money except I've never found a later 880 then this one. There can only be 36 row crops newer than it so I thought it was somewhat worth saving. I think the rear end housing isn't stout enough for the helical transmission and that's why these seem to have more trouble with end play then the spur gear models. The 1600 was released at S/N 124420 to take the place of the agricultural 880 and that pretty much solved the rear end deficiency problems.
