Hello, I'm about to purchase an Oliver tractor
it's a super 88 model, no three point hitch, but it does have a hyd. bucket in front with
wide axle. I'ts in relatively good shape, clean, diesel powered.
I've got a serial # of 89-175, but can't seem to match it up in any charts. the seller claims its
a 1970 model, does anyone know if these tractors
were made in that year still?
I currently have a couple of 51/52 ford 8n's, but am looking for something a little stronger.
About to pay $4000. for this, reasonable?

: Dan. Dan, This offer doesn't sound too bad. But before you buy it check the hour meter on the right hand side of the
block(some didn't have one). If you can make out what it reads If it has more than 4,000 hours on it will start to lose compression and lose power. I would check the shifter to see if it springs to the middle when in nuetral so you don't have to hunt around to find the spot where you go from high to low. When it's idling crack the throttle wide open it should smoke blue
when cold and slightly black when warm. It should not knock like the new diesels.
set the throttle at about the forth knotch, set both brakes and put it in 6 gear then let off the cluthch until the engine begins to pull down, If the govenor works
wright it should begin to smoke gradually, but not suddenly increase
When it' running look under the hood on top of the engine is a little vent
there should be just a little bit coming out.
This is where the blow be from the cylinders comes out.
The P.T.O clutch should require somme effort to engage it fully then snape back when disengaged. The steering should have less than 5 inches of travel no more or it will be hard to handle one the road.
no diesel should leak anywhere.To check pre-heater when not running turn the lights on and push the button the lights should go a little dim
If all this is good It is a good deal

Does this tractor have power steering? If not fill the bucket and drive it
around. See how it handles with a load. The bucket is what helps give this tractor value, but if it is hard to handle, you are not getting a good value. It helps to convert the money to
US on this page. It's getting easier everyday. It would be about $2700 US.
( 2700 X 1.5 = $4050). That is a fare price.

It seems a bit much without a 3-Pt hitch. I have a Super 88, LP, 3-PT, runs great, needs paint, for $2500. I don't believe that 89-175 is the serial number; look below it for an additional number.

1970 is wrong-- 1958 was the last year the supers were built--the three digit models came out in 1958(660,770,880,) $4000 canadian is not too bad-in US funds it is a lot of bucks. Super 88 was a good tractor and compared to an 8n ford it's like comparing grapes and watermelons. Dave
