The Super 88 Diesel I have does not fill with coolant. The only way I have found to get the coolant in the motor is to loosen the thermostat housing until the coolant starts to come out.

The water pump is new the thermostat is new.

Any ideas on what could be the issue?

Thanks for any information.

Drilling the hole worked.
Thanks

Have you checked the lower radiator hose yet?

This is great thanks for all of the replies.

The thermostat was checked after the new one did the same thing.

Don't know why the engine temp goes up but it does. It is very eratic so it maybe that ther is enough water that it is splashing or something.

The direction of the thermostat was sheck both on the old and the new one.

I will drill the whole.

Thanks for all of the information.

Ditto on drilling the small hole. You could have a bad thermostat, even if it"s new. Take it out and put it in a pot of boiling water and see if it opens.

Could the thermostat be in upside down?

fill up radiator and then let it run with radiator cap off till operating tempature. then top it off as it's running, and put cap back on. this works out any air pockets in the engine.

That did not work. The temperature gauge would go up to near the red and then I would shut it off. If was like there wasn't enough heat to open the thermostat. The water in the Radiator never went down.
I have tried this at least twice.

i'm wondering how temp gauge went up but stat not opening. if the temp sensor is up high on engine, then maybe hot air was making gauge rise.

I don't think a temp guage will rise from air temp. I smoked the engine in a New Idea 701 Uni-Harvester once (292 Chevy) when the bypas hose blew on the water pump and all the coolant went out and the guage dropped to near cold. With that said, isn't there a small bypass hose or tube on those? My 77 is out in the haybarn right now and I'm not going back out there right now,but if that is plugged or pinched it won't bypass the thermostat.

if it is a normal mercury filled sensor, it shouldn't matter what it is measuring. perhaps your temp gauge lowered because of the change from water to cooler air let in via broken hose. hold a lighter under any sensor and i do believe the gauge would rise.

in other words, let it run longer. if you are familiar with engines, touch it and see if it's hot. don't mind the temp gauge till you get it full of coolant.

drill a small hole in the thermostat itself..maybe 1/32 or so this will let air in the block escape while filling and not be big enough to render the thermostat usless..some of the older gm thermostats came factory this way..i do it to all of the new ones i install and have never had a problem..drill in the outer ring and not the center part that opens..good luck

Just a bit of old school advice here. Something you may try to eliminate a possible bad thermostat is to take it out altogether. fill the rad up with water, crank it up and watch the water level, fill as required. If you can not see the water circulate in the rad, then you definatly have a blockage somewhere. IE: clogged rad, blocked hose, or bad water pump. Check with your local rad shop and borrow a cooling system pressure tester. They are worth their weight in gold at times. Remember, something had to cause the problem to begin with, and it's a safe bet it won't fix it's self.

Are you sure the gauge is accurate? Ford 4.6 and 5.4 engines in pickups don't like to burp air well. I have a funnel that screws on to the radiator or reservoir. I put as much coolant in as will go. I run the engine untill coolant starts to rise in the funnel. I shut it off and wait a few minutes. The engine will heat soak and open the thermostat. I then fill the system when the coolant drops. Works every time. I do like the hole idea. I've seen best quality thermostats that had a bleed hole with a captured ball bearing that blocked the hole when the engine is running.
