What would cause the 3pt hitch to make a "whining/moaning" noise and drift up and down on a Super 55 and 550? How hard is it to fix and what would it cost? Thanks.

Chances are it is the o-ring in the lift cylinder under the 3 point cover. My experience has been that this is the case 9 out 10 ten times.

From the manual.Noisy pump,air leak on pump inlet[indicated by foaming],pump vanes sticking,relief valve chattering,poor qualith oil, oil too heavy.[reqires 30wt summer].Excessive settling, leaking at cylinder O ring,ball check valve or control valve. Draft control at left rear could be out of adjustment. The good news is that the whole top covermust be removed for service. Better get a book if going to try it yourself. Good luck

Sounds like the "Draft" function to me, used to keep the implement at a constant depth in the soil? I can't find my book right now but there's a little lever on the right hand side under the seat that effects it.

The switch under the seat to enable/disable the draft control was an option that not all had. A couple of guesses would be that someone put a detergent oil in the lift and it is foaming or the fluid has alot of water in it or the pump/seals are failing. Try this, open the plug on the rear end near the PTO shaft that is used to see if the rearend is "full". With the tractor on a level surface, use the lift to raise an implement that will really make the pump work like a bush hog. Cycle it up and down a few times with the tractor sitting still. If oil starts to run out the check hole (and it wasn't before you worked the lift) then you have a leak. If it doesn't, then plug the hole, disconnect the bush hog and raise the 3pt to the full upward position. Once the lift arms max out, you should still be able to manually lift up on the arms. One to two inches travel is optimal. If there is more than that OR if there is no movement you will need to adjust the draft control. This is the turn buckle under the seat on the left side that hooks to the center link bracket. Loosen the jam nut and turn it in or out until 1-2" travel at the full up position is obtained. I assume you have clean non-detergent oil and a fresh filter in the lift already? Post back with what happens and good luck.
P.S. Make sure the sway chains aren't so tight as to be pulling against the lift as it raises. Sounds foolish, so don't ask me why I mention it...
