I HAVE AN OLIVER 550 WITH A 1510 LOADER DRIVEN BY A HYDRAULIC PUMP POWERED FROM THE CRANK PULLEY WITH A SPLINED SHAFT. THE REAR END OF THIS SHAFT LOOKS MORE LIKE AN ADDED WASHER WITH GROOVES FILED INTO IT'S EDGE THAN A SPLINED SHAFT--EVEN THOUGH THE SOCKET ON THE PULLEY HAS MORE DEPTH AND COULD ACTUALLY ACCEPT A SHAFT WITH REAL SPLINES. AS IT IS SET UP, (AND IT HAS SERVED ME WELL FOR THE PAST TEN YEARS), IT LOOKS LIKE THIS FLIMSY LITTLE DISK HAS BEEN HELD INTO THE SPLINED SOCKET BY THE SHAFT'S END THRUST MAINTAINED ONLY BY THE SET SCREWS HOLDING THE OTHER END OF THIS SHAFT TO THE PUMP (WHICH IS FIRMLY BOLTED TO THE LOADER FRAME). DOES ANYONE KNOW WHETHER THIS IS THE ORIGINAL DESIGN? AT THS POINT, MY PROBLEM IS THAT MY LOADER SUDDENLY QUIT AND THE SHAFT APPEARS TO BE TOO SHORT TO WEDGE BETWEEN THE CRANK PULLEY AND THE PUMP. WHAT APPERS TO BE A COUPLER THAT COULD HAVE ADJUSTED IT'S LENGTH IS NOW WELDED SOLID. CAN I GET THIS SHAFT? SHOULD IT HAVE A TRUE SPLINED END? OR ARE THERE PARTS THAT COULD BE WELDED TOGETHER TO SERVE AS WELL?

without seeing what has really happened to your setup that made it sudenly be too short, it is hard for me to be much help. can you lenghten your shaft via this set screw set up you describe? i have no idea what's original or not, but i have an extra shaft that is 14 5/8" long, splined on both ends. it appears to be homemade, but straight. or you could just cut yours in half and lenghten it.

are you saying the shaft doesn't spin the pump anymore?

RIGHT. AFTER I LOOKED TO SEE IF THERE WAS ENOUGH FLUID, AND THERE WAS, i CHECKED THE FRONT DRIVE SHAFT. IT HAD SEPARATED FROM THE CRANK PULLEY. THE SET SCREWS IN THE FRONT PART OF THE SHAFT HAD DEPARTED. I THOUGHT, AHAA, AN EASY FIX. JUST GET THE ALLEN SCREWS REPLACED AND WE'RE BACK IN BUSINESS. BUT NO SUCH LUCK. WHEN I TRIED TO REATTACH THE HYDRAULIC PUMP TO THE LOADER FRAME, WITH THE SHAFT IN IT'S PLACE IN THE SOCKET ON THE CRANK PULLEY, THE SHAFT WAS NOW NOT LONG ENOUGH FOR ME TO GET SOME 'BITE' ON THE INPUT SHAFT OF THE PUMP WITH THE SET SCREWS. SO HOW COULD THAT SHAFT HAVE SHRUNK AFTER TEN YEARS (MORE LIKE 50 SINCE IT WAS MADE). I REALIZED THAT THE LOADER FRAME COULD BE ADJUSTED TO COMPENSATE FOR THE LENGTH, BY BRINGING THE PUMP TO THE REAR SOMEWHAT. BUT THIS WAS LIMITED BY THE TRACTOR LOWER FRONT FRAME, AND IT DIDN'T SEEM VERY FORGIVING TO NOT HAVE TRUE SPLINES ON THE SHAFT END, WHEN I WAS ADJUSTING THIS LENGTH VERY GROSSLY AT THE FRAME. THAT'S WHEN I THOUGHT THAT THERE MAY BE A BETTER WAY TO GO, IF A SHAFT WERE AVAILABLE WITH TYPICAL SPLINES--MAYBE EVEN A HALF INCH LONG WOULD GIVE ME A LITTLE MORE 'WIGGLE ROOM' WITH MY ADJUSTMENT. I DO TEND TO MAKE THINGS OVERLY-COMPLICATED SOME TIMES WHEN I TRY TO LEAVE THINGS BETTER THAN I FOUND THEM. OR MAYBE I JUST DON'T WANT TO HAVE TO FIX IT AGAIN. THAT IS WHY I WAS CURIOUS ABOUT THE SHALLOW REGULAR NOTCHES ON THE END OF THIS SHAFT POSING AS SPLINES AND IF I COULD PUT IN SOMETHING BETTER SINCE IT LOOKS TO ME LIKE THAT IS THE WEAK LINK. WHEN I REMEMBER THAT THIS HAS BEEN RUNNING A LONG TIME WITH THIS SEEMINGLY WHIMPY SET UP, I AM WILLING TO BE HUMBLED IF IT IS THE STOCK SET-UP, BUT BOY WILL I FEEL STUPID IF IT ISN'T AND IT FAILS RIGHT THERE NEXT TIME. THAT'S WHY I WAS ASKING ABOUT THE ORIGINAL SETUP AND WHETHER A TRULY SPLINED SHAFT WAS AVAILABLE.

They were Oliver made for the 550, but I think these drives are pretty rare these days. There is an exploded picture of it in the 550 manual. I will try to rememebr to scan you a copy tomorrow. As I do not how to post it here, I will email it to you.
