I"m restoring my first Oliver. It is a "57 Super 55 Diesel. I"m confused after seeing a lot of different paint schemes in different online pics. Are the wheels supposed to be red? Is the grill supposed to be yellow? Some wheels are green, others white, and some red. Some grills are red, some white.

If red and yellow is to be used, what color red? What color yellow?

Please help. My first show is just a couple of weeks away.

PLEASE, PLEASE- do all of us Oliver folks a favor and DON'T use John Deere Green and Yellow- It just ain't natural. And tends to evoke a very bad reaction among Oliver guys.

No way to the JD colors. I love to look at all the antiques, but I readily pass by the Johnny-Popper rows at the show. I tend to find that bunch too arrogant and ordinary for my taste.

A 57 would have had red wheels and a yellow grill.54thru 56 had green wheels.Olivers attempt to save money. You can get the paint codes from the site mentioned below.

For the 1957 model year due to requests (and complaints) the red wheels were reintroduced. Super models before that had green wheels. The grill was yellow on all of them. White wheels were not introduced until the 3 digit series in 1958. More questions?

Thanks for the very useful information. I had already decided that I like the red/yellow better.....those were the trademark Oliver colors for me.

The 55 I'm restoring is an exceptionally great survivor. The tins are nearly perfect, everything works, and it has less that 200 hrs on a major.

To answer your last question, yes I have many questions. But, one thing that I'm really concerned about is resto accuracy. What would you guys think are some of the "little things" that a good Oliver 55 judge would look for? What things would an amateur builder like me forget or overlook to do? Suggestions?

We never had a Super55, only the bigger ones. But I can tell you what to do on them which would apply to your Super55. First off the ONLY correct way to paint the center strip on a Super is green with yellow letters. Both the intake and exhaust manifold should be painted silver, use something that will take engine heat. Front and back hubs should be green. If it's a true '57 model it will have the "OLIVER" embossed fenders, paint the letters yellow. Red wheels are fine on a very late '56,'57,or'58. If it has power adjust rear wheels paint the rims and blocks silver. Leave all wheel bolts in their natural color or paint them silver. This is how Oliver did all of these things. Be sure to use the correct air cleaner decal for a Super series, Lyle Dumont will have the right one,641-622-2592. Oliver oversprayed a lot of parts, personally I would not try to duplicate that. Otherwise just do what you would normally do on any restoration and strive for perfection. Good luck!

A new wiring harness from Korves is a nice touch. The Oliver brass emblem on the front probably has the paint gone, new ones are available. I'm working from memory right now,I think there is a rubber bumper under the seat, also available.Black, steel or copper core wires, not some gawdy carbon core colored things that you should never use on a tractor anyway because of so much power loss. Just pay attantion to detail I guess.
