Good mornng, everyone! I just got back from taking two seminary buddies to the airport this morning...one heading to Detroit, the other to New York City. It's snowing here, and moving to the East. Last night, I was working on a bakery delivery truck powered by a Cummins 4BTA3.9 engine. I was trying to get the serial number off of the tag, but a loose throttle return spring had rubbed across the tag for many miles, and rubbed-off the final two digits. I used to work for Cummins in Saint Paul, and remembered that the engine blocks were stamped. The operations manual said the serial number should be located on top of the oil cooler port in the block. Just my luck...no stamped number. I called Cumminis NPower in Saint Paul, and they told me a couple of other places to check. No luck in those places, either. Finally, tired of laying on my back with melting snow soaking my pants, I gave up. Using some "CSI"-type techniques, I was able to get the last two digits off of the tag. My question is: where is the serial number stamped on a 4B block? Shep VA, are your three Cummins 6B's all stamped above the oil cooler? This fleet has a lot of other 4B's, so I am sure this will happen again. Any advice will be appreciated. Stay warm, and be safe out on the roads this weekend!

I will have to look Merlin, I am not sure. I know the two 6Bs I have are, but I am not sure about the tractor engine or the grader engine. I will look and let you know.

That is a good idea to know where those numbers are on a tractor too. That serial tag stick out there on the side and could easily be damaged by a tree branch or something.

Dont know anything about the 4Bs though, I normally play with bigger engines :-)

I think I know where you are going with this, but did you get a CPL number or it will not do you any good in this case. Snowing in northwest Ohio also, but much warmer.

Hello, J! Yes, I have the CPL and all the other numbers. The serial number becomes important because it matches the CPL parts to a specific engine. Cummins is a lot like Oliver was with their serial numbers, i.e. serial number 44741155 might be a 6BT5.9 industrial engine, and serial number 44741156 might be a 4B3.9 generator set engine. I got lucky last night and found the last two digits. Are the engine serial numbers stamped anywhere on the White American 60 and 80? Have a great weekend!
