I recently purchased a 1958 Oliver 550 gas tractor. Problem: the pto will not shut off!
The pto reemains on even though the on/off control is engaged or not. Is there any method to correct this or will the tractor need to be split?

first thing you need to do is look thru inspection plate underneath and see what is going on. 4 bolts to remove it. i was able to fix the problem i had with mine by coming in thru the top, no splitting.

The idea of fixing the 550 PTO from the top interests me. What would I be looking for?
What do you think might be causing the problem?
This is my first Oliver so I am naive about just about anything!! I sincerely thank any and all who will give me any assistance.

from posts i have read on here before, i would ask you if the pto is actually engaged when you shut it off or is it just freewheeling?

That's the question I'm going to ask. When you shut the tractor off and hook something to the PTO and restart the engine, does the implement turn with the tractor starter,or does it stop the PTO and just the engine runs OK? The Super 55,550 and 1850 are all famous for just a stiff kind of freewheeling and you have to shut off the engine to attach something just to be on the safe side. Not saying it can't be overcome, just might not be as big a problem as you think, easy to live with as is.
