Cracked rear end housing

I goofed up and ended up cracking the rear end housing where the lift arm of the 3-pt hitch goes into the tractor. The crack is part of the short stub that sticks out for the lift arm to go into. I actually broke a piece of it out. Any ideas on how to repair it? I may swap out rear ends from another tractor. This one is a 1655 by the way.

I guess my question is if it is leaking oil or not. I assume you are talking about the bottom of the tractor housing where the three point lift arm pivots?? and not the rockshaft up on the top of the hydraulic unit.

If that is where it cracked there are seals in there that prevent the gear oil from getting out of the rear end. You have to open up the PTO and the back part of the tractor and there are bolts in there that let the stub shaft slide out and the seals are in behind that. As far as fixing it, that is all cast iron you are dealing with. You can try to heat up the cracked area with a torch and weld it back with someone who konws how to weld cast. If the crack is not leaking and you are not pulling tillage on the three point hitch I would probably leave it alone.

Ask with more questions, I have two 1655s and have put seals in both three point stub shafts on them.

Well the housing leaked plenty of oil. I cracked it where the lift arms go into the cast. I basically need a new housing so that I can get this one back into running order. Either that or a rolling chassis so that I can just swap rear ends. I have talked with some good welders and they all shake their heads no. They might be able to get it so it won't leak but they won't say that it will be strong enough. The kicker, I was borrowing this tractor from a friend of mine. I might have to take the rearend out of my 1650 and make that a drawbar tractor. Is there any value to anyone for a drawbar only 1650?

Well I think I know the route I'm going to go. I can get a bare case for $400. I'm told it is a 40-hour job to switch it over. Does that seem realistic to you fellas?
