I just got my 550 back from a local backyard mechanic (after 18months). The PTO was slipping and could not be adjusted to fix the problem. He said that he had to split the tractor to fix it. We ordered one clutch disc (fiber type?) that he installed. Now the only way the it will stay engaged is if it is held in position. He suggested using a bungie cord to keep it engaged.I have read that it can take 5 discs(?). I see no evidence that the tractor was split. The bolts do not appear to have been removed (greasy-dirty). Did we not use enough discs? How many discs are usually needed when the pto clutch is replaced? I have checked all the linkages. Do I try again with another mechanic. I would like for the tractor to be as "right" as it can be.
Thanks David

I just finished reworking the PTO on a 62 550. I replaced all the fiber disc (5) and cleaned up the metal disc, showed no signs of discoloration or being bent. My seal was leaking so replaced it. I was already into the tractor for more major repairs. I see no way to do much on the PTO without a split. That was the easiest part of my repairs and as long as you don't have to go any farther than the PTO repair it is pretty straight forward. You will need a repair manual, I had a A&T which is better than nothing. I also had a 550 parts book but has no PTO clutch breakdown. Lots of luck and get ready to split. TC

Depending on the serial number of your tractor I believe there will be 5 or 6 fibre plates and 4 or 5 metal plates. It there was a damaged one and the resst were good, they might only have replaced one. As far as not snapping into position, you can adjust it. Under the centre frame there is an inspection plate. Remove the plate and reach through and rotate the clutch assembly until the adjusting ring lock pin is at the bootm. Take a screw driver adn depress the lock pin and rotate the adjusting ring to the next notch. Turning the ring in a clockwise rotation tightens it while counter clock loosens it. If you have the 26" long handle you should have 32 pounds of force with the 5 clutch discs, or 45 pounds with the 6 disc. If you have the short 16" handle it is 50 pounds of force for the 5 disc, and 67.5 pounds for the 6 disc.
